FOR
THOSE SKATERS IN BADGES 5 & 6 IN OUR CANSKATE PROGRAM..... WHAT'S NEXT??????
Skaters in badge 5 will have the opportunity to continue in Canskate
next year, or they may move into the figure skating program along with
any
skaters who have now completed the Canskate
program. The next program is call
Junior
Development. In this program, skaters move into a private or
semi-private
lesson system. Junior Development offers 3 hours per week of ice
time (3
days: Tuesday
Registration for the Junior Development program will take place in the
fall
(usually in late August). Skaters in this program have the option
of
starting in September (fall ice) or in October when we begin our winter
schedule. Private lessons are booked directly with the coach of
your
choice and are filled as arranged. Parents will already be
arranging
lessons for next season this month, so it's never to
early to book. If you are unsure whether or not you will go into
this
program, lessons will still be available in the fall, but you may not
have as
many options. for further information on
this program,
or to arrange next years plans, please contact the coaches directly.

WORDS
OF WISDOM FOR THE PARENT
Kerry Leitch,
renowned Canadian and Olympic coach, is often asked to talk
to
parents new
to the ranks of competitive skating. He shares some basic but
important
words of wisdom that will help ensure a
child's
enjoyment and success in skating:
Love your child
for what he or she is.
Be
realistic about
their ability
Be realistic about
their strong and weak
areas.
Don't
live your desires
through your child.
Understand
that their
skating career will have peaks and valleys.
To
fail a test does not
mean the child is a failure.
Measure
their success
as a person, not as a skater.
Communicate
with the
coach. Make sure you ask questions and
understand
the total
involvement and commitment.
Be
a person your child
can be proud of.
In
consultation with
your child and coaching staff, set realistic
goals.
Understand
that rink
gossip can only be harmful to you, your
child
and your coaching
staff.
Be
supportive of your
training center and their team.
Offer
help in weak
areas rather than criticize.
The
tests passed, and
the medals won will soon be forgotten, but the
impression
you leave
will be for a lifetime.

What a GREAT idea to
have this
website! I remember being so totally lost when my daughter
first from group lessons to the test stream.
We (veteran skating parents) tend to
forget what it's like to be the
'newbie'
parents, learning the ropes of private
lessons, tests, coaching, competitions.
All I can say is, "Good
for
you, Skate
